Never heard of a mod which would crash your computer. Only bad thing is that the game will not run. Unless of course you downloaded a virus. To answer your question ... yes, you can use the images from past C&C games. You would need some sort of editing program like Tibed to access them. Once you get more information on what you can edit you can involve into more complicated things in modding.
